Dates to vote on are Dec 4 or Dec 5 and what time works best for everyone. Party food will be your choice to bring. Just simple finger foods.

Next we need to vote on when the book club meeting for KC pick will take place. We can have the night of the party or we can pick from the weekends of Dec 11 or 18.

Bookclub Breakfast-- Details

Hey there, gorgeous ladies.

Just wanted to give you all some updates on the details for this coming Saturday's meeting (Nov. 20th at 9:00am) for Tar Baby.

Food:
So far, French Toast, Apple Pancakes & Blueberry Muffins are on the menu. However, I will also be making bacon & eggs for anyone who may want something other than bread. lol

If you'd like to bring something as simple as a bowl of fruit or a pitcher of orange juice, go for it! This is not a fancy schmancy meeting with wine & chocolate covered strawberries like my last book (sorry, ladies) it's all about relaxation, this time around. Which brings me to my next subject:

Attire:
I know we don't usually concern ourselves with what we wear to a bookclub meeting, but due to the nature of this meeting Jen & I made an executive decision to ask everyone to come in their pajamas. That's right, ladies--> you need only complete two steps the morning of this meeting.
  1. Roll out of bed.
  2. Drive to my house.

Which brings me to my last subject:

My Address:

My address, for those who've never been is: 8116 Oak Hollow Dr. Arlington, Tx 76001

I'm excited to see you in all your morning glory!

See ya, ladies.

Book Quest Next Journey

11/6/10: The meeting is now being moved to the week or weekend after Nov 15. The rest should still fall into place.

Our next book pick is from Sexy Silky Sasha ...
It is Tar Baby by Toni Morrison

Since it is the holiday season we talked about have our next meeting the weekend of Nov 13, before Thanksgiving.

Then follow that with the next pick the weekend of Dec 11. That way it really does not get to close to the holidays. Hopefully everyone will be able to come to this meeting for our Holiday/Secret Santa/ Gift Exchange gathering.

This is also makes it available for those who like to plan ahead, they know about the time frame of our meetings and fingers crossed it does not mess anyone's holiday schedule.

Books in a Year

I just noticed how we have grown in numbers for each year we have been together. In 2009 we discussed nine books, come on lets see if we can beat that. We are only at four this year so far. We can do better. I think we can do it ;)

A little bit about what it means to be in a book club

First and foremost this is not to be an insult to anyone, I just thought it was interesting and that it would also help us with planning our book club with more success.

Please click and read the article link
Ten Tips for Starting and Running a Successful Book Club

Here is my response to this article.
1. Most of it we already have down. The members, we really don't have any restrictions on, I think I can speak for all of us when I say no strangers. Someone no one knows. Correct?

2. The person who is next in line to pick the book, picks the time and place (according to people available and location available) Majority of available gets the date. We know not everyone can make every meeting because of example: work, school, life getting in the way, a tragedy etc...

3. We don't have any restriction on certain books. If a member does not like or follow that type of reading we don't force the members to read against their will.

4. We want all members to be present, even if the member did not read the book.

5. Usually the member who picked the book has questions they want to discuss or another member has some as well. (Mistie has started a folder with generic questions but also questions for the specific title)

6. We know how the books are picked but we really don't have a policy. I (Mistie) recommend installing one, if you don't show up for 3 consecutive meetings, when your name is next on the list, that member is not eligible to pick a title this time around. Since we have so many members it takes time to get to each individual and picking a book is a privilege! We want everyone to be able to pick one but we also want it to be fair for the members who participate in all meetings. Limit on picking a book. I have no idea. We never have had a problem with this, usually every member has their book picked way in advance.

7. As before, the member can pick any book they wish to discuss. No restrictions

8. We have alot of fun when we meet up and everyone gets to ask and answer questions. If you feel you have not, please let us know that way we can correct the misunderstanding.

9. We never lack for lapse of conversation

10. We respect every one's opinion, even if we don't agree. We can also joke about it and still be ok with continuing on in the discussion

This is not meant to be offensive, its just meant to be informative and to make sure that our book club will last a lifetime.

I, Mistie, personal want this to grow and I don't want anyone to feel the book club was not fair to anyone. No matter what it is. I still want to be doing this 10 years down the road but I also want us to be able to have an idea of what a book club really is.

Much Love,
Mistie

So it looks like we're going to discuss the book next Tuesday evening, August 17th at 7:00pm at my (Elizabeth's) house. Then we're probably going to do the mystery dinner on Saturday, August 21st at 6:00pm also at my house. At the Tuesday night book discussion we will discuss the details of the dinner and what food everyone needs to bring and how to dress. Can't wait!
Elizabeth

Monday, August 9, 2010

Hey guys! It's Elizabeth, I just read all of the comments. Sorry it's taken me a while to get this thing together, it's taken me a while to catch up after getting back in town. So it seems like a lot of people are free on Tuesday night? It seems like the most practicle thing to have the dinner and then discuss the book afterwards since everyone's schedule is so crazy.

So what about next Tuesday, August 17th? Or if Acene is working (and she has the game), two other possible dates are Saturday night, the 21st or Sunday night the 22nd. I think we will need to start promptly at 6:00 to fit everything in AND that means that everyone needs to finish the book. It short and interesting - so no excuses : )

Anyway, comment on which dates work best for you in order of best to least. Can't wait!

And Then There Were None: Murder Mystery Dinner

For this book club meeting, Elizabeth would like us to do a Murder Mystery Dinner. Now for this to work, everyone who says they are coming must come. So for all those interested let us know so we know how many people to plan this event around and when in the next two weeks would work best for everyone.

Also need to decide if we are having the book discussion the same day we have the Dinner or at another time altogether or if the Dinner will take place of the discussion.

So cast your vote!

Thanks

Hey guys!!! Is anyone still reading this???

This is Elizabeth writing. Misti wanted me to go ahead and post my selection for the bookclub. So first you should be reading All the Way Down and then after that we are going to read........

And Then There Were None

It's not very long and it's really good. I can't wait to discuss it!

Hope you guys are having an amazing time in Europe and can't wait to hear about it and start meeting again : )

Meeting for Love The One You're With

The date has changed to Friday April 2, 2010. Jennifer does not get off till 9pm that night so we will begin at that time. It will be snack night, so just bring something lite. Hope to see everyone there!

I did not realize this was Easter until Cara pointed this out.

I have decided on April 4, 2010 Sunday to host the discussion. It will be at my apartment. Not sure on the time because the work schedule is not up but I am open on sunday nights and I don't mind it being late. Most times we are all pretty much available for this day.

If any one has a problem with this date (besides whether or not you have finished the book) please let me know and we can work around it!

As for what is to be served, I know Bobby wanted to cook for all of you but if he has to work I was thinking of a potluck. Something lite I guess is what I am going for. (depending on the time? Maybe something heavy?)

Any ideas or suggestions, just comment!
Hope everyone has gotten a chance to read it and is enjoying the story.

Love The One You're WIth

Here is the summary for our next bookclub pick.

emily giffin official website: "Ellen and Andy's marriage doesn't just seem perfect, it is perfect. There is no question how deep their devotion is, and how naturally they bring out the best in each other. But one fateful afternoon, Ellen runs into Leo for the first time in eight years. Leo, the one who brought out the worst in her. Leo, the one who left her heartbroken with no explanation. Leo, the one she could never quite forget. When his reappearance ignites long-dormant emotions, Ellen begins to question whether the life she’s living is the one she's meant to live. LOVE THE ONE YOU'RE WITH is a powerful story about one woman at the crossroads of true love and real life."

RIP Mr. Zinn

All I want to say about Howard, is thank you for all that he has done for American. Just in case you didn't know all the wonderful he has done I'll give you the low down. He is from a poor Jewish, factory family in Brooklyn, NY. He was a in the Air Force during WWII as a bombardier. Which he regret. He was head of the department of social science at Spelman College, which made a lot of noise and racket's in the 60s. He influence students to stand up against segregation in schools. it was so bad that the school had 30 violations jjust on the first and fourteenth amendment, lol. He wrote many articles about segregation during the time of John FK wrote some to Edgar Hoover, about the end of segregation. Zinn is all about civil rights and education and that's why I love him. He tells the history from the people's eyes in their own words, not lies you were taught school. I would definitely miss him I just wish I will have the chance to meet him. RIP Mr. Zinn

Hello my fellow book worms, I went ahead and choose Outlander for the month of Feb. going into March. As it was informed to me, you can find it for $4.50 or so at the Half Price Book Store. I will be hosting it at my home with a dinner. Ideas are welcome. fyi: I would like to host a sleep over at my place, maybe in mid-March.

Feb's Pick

FROM ACENE:

Because I'm forgot how to post on our blog, I'm reduced to sending this out on facebook.
I going you have to get a poll on which book I should pick:

Little Prince - it's about the prince setting out to explore planets and cure his loneliness.
not you can read it online at - http://www.angelfire.com/hi/littleprince/frames.html

or

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - historical sci-fi adventure-romance story.
The Outlander is at the half price bookstore for about $8-$10.

I myself wants to read Gabaldon's book but I'm going to have you guys pick which on will suit us both.
