A little bit about what it means to be in a book club

First and foremost this is not to be an insult to anyone, I just thought it was interesting and that it would also help us with planning our book club with more success.

Ten Tips for Starting and Running a Successful Book Club

Here is my response to this article.
1. Most of it we already have down. The members, we really don't have any restrictions on, I think I can speak for all of us when I say no strangers. Someone no one knows. Correct?

2. The person who is next in line to pick the book, picks the time and place (according to people available and location available) Majority of available gets the date. We know not everyone can make every meeting because of example: work, school, life getting in the way, a tragedy etc...

3. We don't have any restriction on certain books. If a member does not like or follow that type of reading we don't force the members to read against their will.

4. We want all members to be present, even if the member did not read the book.

5. Usually the member who picked the book has questions they want to discuss or another member has some as well. (Mistie has started a folder with generic questions but also questions for the specific title)

6. We know how the books are picked but we really don't have a policy. I (Mistie) recommend installing one, if you don't show up for 3 consecutive meetings, when your name is next on the list, that member is not eligible to pick a title this time around. Since we have so many members it takes time to get to each individual and picking a book is a privilege! We want everyone to be able to pick one but we also want it to be fair for the members who participate in all meetings. Limit on picking a book. I have no idea. We never have had a problem with this, usually every member has their book picked way in advance.

7. As before, the member can pick any book they wish to discuss. No restrictions

8. We have alot of fun when we meet up and everyone gets to ask and answer questions. If you feel you have not, please let us know that way we can correct the misunderstanding.

9. We never lack for lapse of conversation

10. We respect every one's opinion, even if we don't agree. We can also joke about it and still be ok with continuing on in the discussion

This is not meant to be offensive, its just meant to be informative and to make sure that our book club will last a lifetime.

I, Mistie, personal want this to grow and I don't want anyone to feel the book club was not fair to anyone. No matter what it is. I still want to be doing this 10 years down the road but I also want us to be able to have an idea of what a book club really is.

Much Love,
Mistie
